Special Degree in Political Science and International Relations – BA (Hons)

From 2017, Sri Lankan branch of Al-Mustafa International University, introduce a four years of new degree program, Special Degree in Political Science and International Relations. The courses are available in Tamil, Sinhalese and English Languages. The Courses are taught by well-recognized scholars of Political Science and International Relations. The program is recognized by the University Grant Commission (UGC).

In line with the Quality System at the University all study programs and topics are required a common framework for quality assurance and systematization of evaluation procedures. The purpose of these procedures is to identify indicators of lack or quality, and is a part of our ongoing efforts to ensure and improve the quality of the curriculum.

As a student, you will therefore be asked to participate in several different evaluations through your study. For example, participation in surveys, feedback to course leaders or participating in focus groups, both on your program and the individual courses.

The program makes an annual report on the study. Measures for further work of education should be part of the report.

Periodically, and at least every four years or when signs of quality failure, it will be carried out a periodic evaluation of the program as a whole. In this work, your feedback as a student of great importance. There is a cycle of when the various programs should undergo periodic program evaluation.

The credit system

The weight of the Political Science and International Reations Degree is 120 credits. Students are expected to complete 15 credits per semester. One credit is equal to 45 learning hours and the learning hours include lecture hours, self-learning, extracurricular activities, practical sessions and field visits.

Assignments and Examinations

Student performance is evaluated continuously throughout the degree program. The student evaluation system is based on the Continuous Assessment System (CAS).  Under CAS, students are evaluated through classroom tests, oral presentations, assignments, project reports etc. The method of assessment is decided by the course leader and may differ from course to course. All assessments are evaluated, marked and returned to the students with comments from the marking examiner.

There will be a final examination at the end of each course and the final grade is determined by the overall performance of the CATs and the final examination.

The weight of the Continuous Assessment Tests is 40% and the final examination carry 60% of the final mark. All students are encouraged to take the CATs as securing a good mark by taking the final examination only would be challenging.

Academic Staff

Academic staff of the MIU is comprised of experts of different subjects of Political Science and International Relations. Further the MIU has a highly skilled group of visiting lecturers who are experts international politics, conflict resolution, public policy and public administration.

Entry Requirements

General requirements

To enroll as a student to follow the Bachelor of Laws (Hons) Degree awarded by the MIU, candidates should possess,

  • Four passes at the General Certificate of Advanced Level Examination old structure.


  • Three passes in core subjects at the General Certificate of Advanced Level Examination new structure


  • Possess any qualification accepted under the Alternative Qualifications List approved by the MIU


English requirements

Each student should pass English subject at the General Certificate of Ordinary Level Examination.


Fee structure

All students should pay a fee of LKR 10, 000 as the admission fee and the course fee is LKR 120000.  This fee is only 50% of the total cost. The fee is payable on semester basis, monthly basis or as a onetime fee. Further each student must pay examination fee for each subject LKR 1, 000.
